There, as a senior staff instructor, he led mountaineering, hiking, and river or sea kayaking in Alaska; natural history, mountaineering, and hiking in the Rockies; cold-desert hiking and mountaineering in Utah; and, at the school’s NOLS Mexico base in Baja California, sea kayaking courses in the Sea of Cortez and hiking courses in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. He was the first manager of the Carleton College Cowling Arboretum, restoring native ecosystems, managing student workers, and sharing his knowledge and expertise with Carleton students and the community at large. He lives in Minnesota with his wife Ann and their two cats, one very small, one very large. He can often be found doing what he loves most: going for a look—observing nature’s stories, off-trail, in the middle of the city, or wherever the tracks may lead.
